Raymond and Shirley managed the business as the Cozy Lunch until 1964. Then additional buildings were bought and completely remodeled which increased the seating capacity to 180 people. The name then changed to Chances “R” Restaurant. Expansion was risky, “Chances are we’ll go broke,” Raymond confided to Shirley, “but I want to give it a try.”
I was taken there by friends and they paid the bill so I don't know. I can tell you it was amazingly great food!!

Call them. Yes they have private rooms.
That is correct
Ate there once recently and food was good and decently priced! We did call ahead to make a reservation so didn't have to wait (it was after a husker game!)
Hello Bonnie, Yes, you are correct. We do close for Christmas Day.
Attentive, kindly service and carefully-prepared comfort food in a classic Midwestern setting. The dining room's mirrored paneling reflects dark wood and stained-glass light fixtures - a warm blend of cozy and dignified. Maybe the most tender pork ribs I've ever had? Highly recommended!
Charming restaurant with great history and excellent food. We had the chicken fried steak and the prime rib dinner. The meals come with the salad and they bring out the dressing carousel that you only see in the traditional steakhouses. The salad was full of goodies. They serve hash browns which are hard to come by these days. They were done perfect on the inside with a nice crispy outside and the prime rib was tender and delicious. The chicken fried steak had a flavorful light breading and came with a light peppery gravy. I always get a side of gravy. The rolls came right out of the oven and they had a nice soft center. Save room for dessert, they all looked amazing. I had the cheesecake and it was amazing. I encourage you to take the time to view the pictures in the hallway that tell the history of the restaurant. I love that places like this are still around.
Always delicious... we're from Hastings and make it a point to go several times a year to the Sunday brunch, especially for birthdays and anniversaries. Was a little disappointed that they did not have the "amazing" blue cheese chicken salad this last time. We love the fried chicken and mashed potatoes /gravy. My two boys LOVE the omelet bar and waffles. I enjoy all the flavorful salads and smoked salmon (love, love, love the blue cheese dressing). The roast beef and ham are carved to your liking . So many other delicious items on the menu NO ONE will leave hungry or without a favorite.
Had the prime rib probably the best prime rib I've had in a long time
Wasnt impressed... if anyone in your dinner party doesn't want the prime rib buffet, but you do... your out of luck! Apparently it's "2 different entities and the kitchen can't keep up and it's just too big of a hassle"... so they seated us in the nostalgic 1980's lounge area (away from the locals and the people who were more dressed up). Ordered the prime rib which was ok. I asked for mushrooms with my steak, which came smothered with country style gravy...weird, and rice pilaf... which was cold and overcooked. Had cherry cheesecake for dessert which was dry and the cheesecake was burnt and had the texture of cake. I don't see how this place could be "Nebraska's diners choice".
Was not thrilled with the food. Salad was a sight for sore eyes, prime rib was the worst I've had and not worth waiting 30 minutes to get it. I have ate here before and figured it's been a few years and that I'd try again and have decided that I will never go back. The servers were nice though.
Wanted a spot for lunch, this place came up with pretty good ratings. Ordered French Onion soup but waitress said broiler was broke and she didn't think the soup was good cooked in oven. So...we ordered a house salad and a prime rib open face sandwich. Sandwich was pretty good. We didn't really think this place was above ordinary. Just ok.
Delicious home style food (comfort food) at a unique and fun location! The fried chicken is some of the best fried chicken I have ever eaten. Hamburgers aren't bad either, and the desserts looked really good as well. All tasted homemade!
Been stopping here for great steak, chicken, and fabulous homemade dressings for years going to and from Colorado and Chicago. Have a good vodka martini and enjoy.
Service was great. I had the 6 jumbo shrimp. They are really jumpbo. I could only eat 3 of them. It comes with soup or salad. Your choice of potatoes and a sour dough rolls. I had planned to have a slice of carrot cake, after that big meal I couldn't. Will go back again
So elegant! Love their fried chicken. Power went out but they kept things going.
The blue cheese dressing and fried zucchini were amazing.
Not really a 5 star restaurant, but really good food. However, no staff are wearing masks or gloves..
The food here is to die for and owner is amazing met him and talked with him. Thanks so much and Happy 4th of July from us here at Big Red Towing out of Lincoln.
Indoor seating opened 6/1/20. 5 min N of I-80. Returned to our favorite central Nebraska restaurant for legendary prime rib. Seating is appropriately spaced. Servers are careful to follow virus guidelines. We need to support these places or they will be going under soon.
It's a good place that has been around forever!! A favorite place in York! The rolls were delicious!! The chicken fried steak my mother and father in law love! The wait staff just wonderful and patient!! The only problem I had was the Hamburger steak very small with a small portion of fries for the price! The flavor was good but just small! Thanks for the wonderful service!!
Definitely take the time and enjoy your dinner. Excellent food, clean and friendly atmosphere.
Chances R is a great place to enjoy an incredible Prime Rib buffet! The food was magnificent and the atmosphere made me feel like home. An A+ destination in Central Nebraska!
We really liked this oasis. The building and architecture are amazing. Inside the host and waiter were excellent. The food and service were very good. We are looking forward to our return.
Chances R is a dining experience unlike any other - seemingly from a bygone era, when elegance, service, value, and creating a dining experience was the standard of excellence. The quality of service and food were amazing, and the meat was among Nebraska's finest. I was expecting more from the cheesecake (too much crust for my tastes) but it was still an excellent experience and great value. I highly recommend it!
Came from out of town. Sat for 10 mins and never had anyone ask for drinks or orders... VERY disappointing...Took a trip to Kerry’s in McCool Jct. Great food, Fast and friendly Service! The extra 10 minute drive was worth it!
We have been enjoying The Chances R for at least 40 years! Today was no exception. The French dip sandwich was full of tender, delicious roast beef and her Turkey croissant came with a plate full of fresh fruit and pasta salad. I confidently recommend this restaurant to friends and traveling customers of our shop
Great option to eat in York. The prime rib sandwich and the chicken fried steak are delicious.
Unfortunately they only have the rib-eye on Monday night, went ahead and ordered the fried chicken they cook it in lard and I'm really excited because I love lard I'm very happy to have found this place it's been here since 1929 the people are really cool the salad was excellent they make all of their own salad dressings I have the thickest blue cheese I've had.Definitely in my happy place.
Solid baked potato. French onion soup was excellent.
